Actual payload and maximum payload: What they are?

Before you can manage your van’s load effectively, it’s important to distinguish between two key concepts: actual payload and maximum payload. While they may sound similar, they refer to very different things and have a direct impact on your van performance.

  • The actual payload of a van is the weight it can carry on a given trip (passengers, equipment, and fuel). It is a variable value. 
  • The maximum payload is the absolute limit set by the vehicle manufacturer and legal regulations. For example, the Transit Custom payload ranges from 616 to 1,370 kg depending on the model. This is a fixed value. 

Respecting the payload limit and distributing it correctly within the vehicle is closely related to fuel-efficient driving. An overloaded mobile workshop with poorly located equipment consumes more fuel, is less safe, and suffers greater wear and tear. 

How to calculate maximum payload capacity with this formula 

Whenever you’re faced with the question how is payload calculated?, you only need to know two things: the maximum authorized mass and the tare of your van. With this information, you’re ready to put this simple formula into practice: 

Payload = Maximum authorized mass – Tare 

  • The tare weight is the weight of the empty vehicle, including basic tools and essential fluids (e.g., coolant). It is directly proportional to the height and size of the vehicle and is reduced when we add equipment (e.g., van racking ). 
  • The maximum authorized mass is the maximum limit allowed for the vehicle. 

How to calculate payload capacity of your van: Practical example 

If a van has a maximum authorized mass of 3,500 kg and a curb weight of 2,000 kg, its payload will be 1,500 kg. We just have to apply the data to the formula we just taught you: 

Maximum Authorized Mass (3,500 kg) – Tare (2,000 kg) = Payload 1,500 kg

How do you calculate payload 

When you’re looking for how to calculate vehicle payload at a specific time, or, in other words, the actual payload, the formula is as follows: 

Actual payload = Maximum payload – (Passengers + Fuel + Equipment) 

Let’s see it with an example: 

Maximum payload (1,500 kg) – (250 kg + 50 kg + 100 kg) = 1,100 kg 

Do the physical dimensions of the van affect the payload? 

Imagine you know the size of the VW transporter and the height of the VW transporter. Can you use this information to calculate the payload of this van? Not really, because they’re not included in the formula we just saw. With this information, you can calculate the available cargo volume. 

These measurements, however, are indirectly related to payload. Thus, the longer a vehicle is, the greater its maximum mass tends to be. With a high roof, the exact opposite occurs (they increase the curb weight).
